Low-tech captioning

From time to time, you will see videos on YouTube that have been captioned in other languages. Most of the time, captioning was done during the editing process, and hard-coded into the video itself.

While it may look a bit more professional, captioning this way is relatively slow, computer resource-intensive (if using a video editing program), irreversible if you don't keep a backup raw version, and sometimes illegible if it's online and the bandwidth only allow for a small sized screen.

I recommend keeping the raw video and the captions as separate files, and have programs do the combining. This used to be a low-profile task back in 2006 when only Google Video allowed it, but now that YouTube introduced live overlaying of captions since August of 2008, it's a feature that can prove useful.
