Thank you for coni-acting me to express your opinion on me issue of immigration. This is an important yet contentious issue that has generated more mail than any other recent issue. I appreciate you taking the time to contact me.
Everyone acknowledges that our current immigration system is broken. It is also apparent that any “fix” will need to include better enforcement of our existing laws and better protection of our borders. Also, we need to acknowledge that there are 11 million people residing in this country illegally and the vast majority of them are law-abiding, productive and contributing members of our society. To ignore either increased enforcement or the sheer number of illegal immigrants or to emphasize one activity to the exclusion of the other will doom any reform we try to undertake. For that reason, I have opposed or voted against various legislative proposals that only address one aspect of the problem.
Any effective reform must have five components. First, provide more funding for border enforcement and better technology. Second, put law-abiding immigrants with more than five years oftime in the United States on the path to legal immigration status. Third, conduct a case-by-case evaluation of immigrants without jobs, or with criminal records or less than five years in the United States. Fourth, maintain a seasonal worker immigration program. Fifth, fully enforce laws against the hiring of undocumented workers.
